[This is a fantastic album. It always feels particularly good when you play an album from a band you have no idea about and thus have no expectations, and find it's a superb album. Excellent drumming, great guitar work and some excellent vocals all add up to a top quality album. With a running time of a fraction over an hour its a good long album, too. Highly recommended.]

Although I'd never come across Martiria before, this is actually their sixth album. The Italian band formed in 1987 as a doom metal band but never really took off and the members went their own ways before reforming in 2002. In 2004 they released their debut album, and now ten years on they have signed to Rocksector records and are releasing their sixth album. Formed in 1987, Italian band Martiria have undergone various changes in personnel, this latest reincarnation featuring one of the most powerful drummers on the rock scene, Vinny Appice of Dio, Heaven and Hell and Black Sabbath no less. A mix of doom metal, a little classic rock, Black Sabbath influences from the Heaven and Hell era, and a huge serving of European power metal, R-Evolution is a major triumph. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about Martiria’s previous album (2012’s “Roma S.P.Q.R.”). It was a good effort but there were a few specific issues that I found it hard to take in. With their new “R-evolution” album, the band seems to have addressed each of those issues with the result that…lo and behold, they’ve created an absolute killer of an album. First surprise is the band’s new vocalist: Flavio Cosma, whose singing is huge, epic and at times gave me the goosebumps. ‘The Road to Tenochtitlan”, for instance, has him singing like a sort of Glen Hughes let loose in a moshpit. I Martiria tornano nella consueta forma con il loro sesto disco in studio, “R-Evolution”. Notizia di per sé succulenta e foriera di grandi aspettative, a cui si aggiunge l’avvicendamento dietro il microfono tra Freddy e Flavio Cosma, e soprattutto Vinnie Appice ospite di lusso dietro le pelli, sicuramente uno dei più quotati musicisti in ambito “oscuro”, dotato com’è di quello stile unico e roboante noto al grande pubblico sin da “Mob Rules” dei Black Sabbath (anno di grazia 1981).
